Wedding photographers pride themselves on the ability to capture gorgeous images in extremely stressful, difficult and unfriendly conditions.  I’ve seen enough pros in action to know that there’s so much more to it than just taking pictures…coordination, people wrangling, dealing with light issues, dodging Uncle Bob the photographer and Vinny the videographer who keep getting in the shot…

Wedding photographers are wedding specialists.  Which is why it’s so surprising that a professional photographer told his friend who was planning a wedding…

“Don’t hire a wedding photographer.”

Here’s a direct quote from the Smog Ranch blog:

“There are many positive things about the wedding photography world, including some great photographers, social media pioneers, workshop pioneers, branding and marketing pioneers, but with these have come the vast homogenization and capitalization of the business…Anytime someone ramps up production, it is nearly impossible to maintain initial quality.”

Whew!  Is it getting hot in here?

I’ve heard the argument many times.  Wedding photographers say you should hire a wedding specialist.  Budget brides claim you can get more original work for half the price if you hire a professional photographer who doesn’t specialize in weddings.

What do you think?
