2013 Wedding Trend Predictions: Industry Round Up

What will this next year hold for the wedding industry?  Will the newest styles and trends will knock our socks off…or leave us gagging?

I’ve scoured the Cyberverse in my quest for the latest 2013 wedding predictions far and wide.  Welcome to the wild, wacky world of this year’s wedding trends.

#1 – Bold, Intense Use of Color

Colors that pop are predicted across the board.  You’ll see bursts of color in bridesmaids gowns, accessories, decor and on the cake.

Mint green is the darling of the moment, but all shades of green are hot.  Just check out Pinterest for image after image of minty green goodness.

The Huffington Post also predicts a surge in neutral palette wedding themes.  Really?  I hope they give our photographer friends something to work with other than white on beige. Yawn.

#2 – Vintage Nods to the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s

Brides will continue their love affair with vintage by exploring the sexy sophistication of 20’s, 30’s and 40’s style.  The uber-popular series Downton Abbey and the upcoming remake of The Great Gatsby are feeding this trend.A wedding cake with lace accents and flowers on top.

#3 – Lace, Lace and More Lace!

Nothing says romantic, vintage sophistication like lace.  Wedding pros and experts predict that lace will appear on gowns (mimicking Kate Middleton’s dress), on the cake, on invitations and more.

#4 – More DIY.  Say It Ain’t So!

Couples will continue to pursue increasing complex do it yourself wedding projects.  Bridal Tweet’s wedding fortune tellers point out that Pinterest’s rising popularity makes DIY accessible.  As brides attempt more complex projects such as attire, some wedding experts believe they will recruit wedding vendors for assistance rather than doing it all on their own.

#5 – Patterns, Prints and Chevron.

Emerging wedding trends are all about pattern: gingham, polka dots, paisley and the sweetheart of bridal style, chevron.  (Will you think less of me if I admit that I thought chevron was an oil slick?)

#6 – Groom Involvement and Spending Increases.

Yes, ladies, the groom is getting more involved!  2013 sees him not just pretending to pay attention while you show him color swatches; he also becomes more active in spending on other parts of the wedding, especially his attire, accessories and groomsmen’s swag.

#7 – “Wed Tech” is Invited to the Wedding.

Technology and social media continues to leave its thumbprint on the weddings of the younger generation.  Couples will have Skype toasts at their weddings and invite guests to attend “virtually” via live streaming and broadcasting.  In addition, couples will use wedding apps and social media in their planning, and encourage guests to use photo sharing apps instead of disposable cameras.

#8 – Customization: Unique, Unusual, Non-Traditional Venues and Entertainment.

Couples are searching for ways to make their weddings more unique, personal and FUN.  This will result in more non-traditional wedding venues and entertainment options.  Think: museums, barns and zoos.  Mariachi bands, belly dancers, piano men and Celtic dancers.

Hitch’d predicts the rise of the “Unwedding” as couples explore smaller, more intimate and less traditional options for the wedding…along with a corresponding collective whine from wedding vendors who are no longer wanted or needed.  (Hey, they said it, not me.)

#9 – Wedding Dresses with Pockets!

Yes!  This is my favorite predicted wedding gown trend, and I hope, hope, hope it comes true.  As a gal who’s at a loss without pockets to thrust my hands into (Grandma, forgive unlady-like me) I rejoice.

Other predicted gown trends include: two as one gowns, still more lace, laser cut, bustier and gold colored wedding gowns.

#10 – Camping Wedding Themes.

Really, I say?  Who knew Matthew McConaughey was a bridal trend setter?

Apparently, we can expect to see imitators embracing a camping wedding theme trend with their choice of venue (rustic cabin, anyone?) and decor (pine needles, birch bark and woodchucks.)

#11 – Food Trucks ‘R Us.

Couples feature food trucks at the wedding to delight guests with vending carts delivering popcorn, ice cream, grilled cheese and even vegan sandwiches.

#12 – Less is More Or a Return to Formality Normality?

Here’s where the experts disagree.  Some experts predict a continued focus on budget and simplicity; others see an increase in elaborate spending and formal weddings that harkens back to pre-Recession days.

I take the middle on this one.  I suspect luxury brides will begin testing out displays of elegance and extravagance again, now that it’s no longer verboten to show off your cash abundance.  Low and mid-budget brides will still mind their wallets, using DIY to attempt the more glamorous trappings of their high-end sisters, as budgets slowly creep upwards.

#13 – Smart and Savvy Vendors Win.

I’ll take a shot at my own prediction for lucky #13.  The wedding vendors who embrace these trends and the challenges they bring will forge new paths to prosperity in 2013.  They will pioneer new collaborations between their wedding expertise and DIY, and integrate emerging trends and technology to intense delight their couples.

Those pros who waste their energy complaining, lecturing and fighting these changes will lose the battle and gradually fade into the background, whining, wasted and BROKE.

2013 Wedding Vendor Survey Results – Kindle Winner Announced!

Last week we surveyed our audience of wedding professionals to find out what your biggest challenges are and what we can do at Book More Brides to make your life a whole lot more profitable and FUN.

We promised to use these results to improve the articles and videos we make this year (I do solemnly swear!) and to share them with you.

Oh, and we also hosted a sweepstakes so that one lucky winner gets a free Kindle Fire!  How could I forget that?

Congratulations to Tina Lucy of Georgia.  Your Kindle is on the way. :)

Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to our survey.  (If you missed it, your results won’t count in this round up, but you can still tell us what you think here.)

Before we get to the results…

Our Survey Disclaimer

This survey is too small to be “statistically relevant” (that’s fancy talk for, “don’t bet the farm on these results”) for the whole wedding community at large.  However, it IS relevant for our Book More Brides friends and followers, and it may indicate larger trends.

These results are based on over 500 survey responses received from wedding professionals who are on our email list or who visit our website.

Now that my lawyers are appeased, we can get to the good stuff!

Watch this wedding trends video to get the full results:

Highlights From the Survey

  • The largest segment of survey respondents (22.2%) have been in business for 5-10 years, with 50.9% in the business for 1-15 years.
  • When asked which type of information video they most like to watch, “Steph & Jeff LIVE” came in the #1 choice, followed by Power Point.  A mixture seems to be most preferred.  (And thanks for the request for live babies and more funny hats?!??)
  • When asked what topics we should cover:

#1 – Marketing Strategies 82.7%
#2 – How to Get More Leads 74.5%
#3 – Sales Techniques 66.1%
#4 – (Price and Value, Social Networks and Dealing with Competition get an Honorable Mention with > 50% voting for each of them.)

  • THE SHOCKER – 47.9% of vendors report making less than $25,000 per year!

This last point has me reeling.  $25,000 of annual income is NOT a liveable wage in my neck of the woods, and probably not in yours, either.  Especially if you have a family.

Jeff and I are re-dedicating ourselves to giving you more of what you want and need, making it more useful and stripping away the dross to help you make more money and build the life you want in 2013.

Sound like a good plan to you?

Thanks again for being a part of our community!  More good stuff to come in our new series of videos to be released soon…

To Show Prices Or Not Show Prices On Your Website

Dress_ShopDeciding whether to show your prices on your website is tricky. Most often wedding vendors choose not to show prices as the packages can depend on each particular wedding. At the same time, according to the article by Shane McMurray on The Wedding Report, 81% of brides want to see prices on your website.

The pros of showing at least some of your prices are to give a bride an idea of what she really wants, and whether she can even afford you in the first place. The cons are that it can set unrealistic expectations by the bride as well as have her focus on the price, rather than the quality of your work.

Something that I have seen recently is wedding businesses who will show two to three packages on their website and then encourage the bride to contact them for additional packages that will fit their needs best. What do you think? Is giving a bride a ballpark figure helpful or detrimental to your business?

How To Stay In Sync With Changing Trends

pink-bridal-show

Wedding trends are changing as fast as you blink. The last thing any wedding business wants is to wake up one morning to find that all their advertising looks like it is ten years old. Keeping up with trends is crucial, and the determining factor of most wedding colors and styles is based on the fashion industry.

An article by Glamour Weddings takes a look at high fashion dresses. Colors are deepening, and over the top details are becoming the norm. For instance, bridal party formalwear is beginning to take on a feeling of the 1930’s and 1940’s, while adding details and trim to an extreme that hasn’t been seen since the Victorian era.

So how do you keep up with the changes? Keep an eye on magazines, both printed and online, noticing what the top designers are doing, colors, details, and textures. Take a look at the arrangements done by top florists, and check out sites that show real weddings from your area and keep track of what is being done locally. If there is a big gap between your web site, and what is actually being done, change your pictures and fonts to appeal to the modern bride.

Why Are People Selling Their Wedding Dresses?

Wedding_Dress

You have heard about the wedding trends of how some brides are selling their wedding dresses, and have perhaps even seen them in consignment and thrift stores right? So why are they doing it, and how do brides get a good price?

NBC did an interview of Tracy DiNunzio who is the founder of Recycled Bride and she explains that brides are selling their wedding dresses because they love them and want to see the dresses worn again. It’s not a tough decision as it also helps them recoup part of the original cost – which is great for anyone who buys an expensive designer dress.  Recycled Bride is an amazing tool for brides who want the designer dress but can’t afford the original price. They often sell the dresses for up to 90% off the original retail price.

How is the “recycled wedding” trend affecting your business?

Wedding Industry Trends 2011: 17 Bridal Style and Décor Predictions

Fortune teller holding a crystal ball

Now that’s it’s officially 2011, everyone and their mother is announcing the new wedding trends for the year.

I am not a trend spotter.  For some reason the names of designers, types of flowers and motifs can’t stay in my head.  When I started blogging, I had to force myself to pay attention to the “little details” brides love, but it still doesn’t come naturally for me.

That’s why these wedding trend posts always catch my eye.

Maybe you’re like me and you don’t have time to keep up on all the trends yourself.  If that’s the case, you’re in for a treat with this blog post from Christine Boulton at Think Like a Bride.

Christine has an uncanny knack for calling out wedding industry trends before they happen and reporting current trends when you need them most.

The Top 10 Wedding Trends of 2011

Happy New Year 2011 card

The Perfect Wedding Guide gave their take on the upcoming wedding trends we’ll be seeing in 2011.

Some their predictions are a little surprising.  Here are some of the trends I’m seeing here in our New York market:

  • More mid-week weddings.  This month we had two!
  • Inexpensive wedding favors or donations instead of favors.
  • Less elaborate floral centerpieces with most of the floral expense going toward the bridal party flowers.
  • More focus on meaning, less focus on elaborate trimmings.
  • Increased desire for a personalized, one-of-a-kind wedding experience.  (Yes, this probably means more crazy requests.)

If Everything Is Free for Today’s Bride, What Do We Have Left to Sell?

I read the book Free: The Future of a Radical Price by Chris Anderson this year and it completely blew my mind.

A sign in blue that reads free

Anderson talks about the rift in the mindsets of people over 30 and people under 30 when it comes to “free.”

Those over 30 grew up hearing, “Nothing is free.”  “You don’t get something for nothing.”  They had first-hand experiences with snake oil salesmen and “free” trials that ended up having a hefty price tag.

Those under 30 have an entirely different perspective.  They were born into Myspace, Google, Youtube, Flickr.  They live in a world where information is free, music is free, blogs are free.  They’ve come to expect it.

What will this do to the wedding industry?  EWedNews explores this idea in this new article  here: “Subscriptions Can’t Compete With Free Exchange of Information

My question is this: Are we going to fight the push for free information or are we going to use it to build our businesses?

I know which one I’m going to choose!

Sure, information is abundant and that which is abundant becomes very, very cheap.  On the other hand, with so much information available…what becomes scarce?

TIME.  We have everything at our fingertips and so many choices, but no time to sift through them.

SPACE.  We have such an abundance of stuff that we have nowhere to put it.

RELATIONSHIPS.  With everyone spending so much time online, we don’t connect with people in person any more.

While information gets cheaper and cheaper, our time gets more precious, more expensive.  Time-savers are selling like hotcakes.  Storage facilities are filled to capacity.  Online dating services are making millions.

When one resource dries up, let’s look for the opportunity.  Instead of fighting the trend, let’s embrace it and find a way to make money where things are scarce.

What do you think about the wave of free information and how it is affecting the wedding business?  Leave a comment and let’s stir up some discussion!
