Does FREE marketing, the kind that actually works, even exist?

It’s true that marketing is going to cost you either time or money. But there are some amazing free wedding marketing resources you need to be taking advantage of.

What started out as “14 Free Wedding Marketing Websites” has grown to a list of more than 18 websites and 30 local business directories.

Before you start using these free marketing resources, there are some key things you need to know or you can mess this up. We’re going to tell you why this is important, which sites you simply MUST list yourself on, and the mistakes to avoid.

Do this right and it will bring you more leads. Do this wrong and all you’ll do is waste more of your precious time.

These directory sites and listings get a lot of website visitors and have a lot of activity. This means that typically they have a lot more visibility and ranking that your website does. When a bride or groom is searching, they’re more likely to find you on these higher ranking sites.

These websites and directories also act as multiple points of contact with the bride and groom, so that your business is everywhere.

Studies show that it takes 5-12 contacts with your business before they buy.

Every time they see you on a review site or a business listing, it gets them one step closer to booking you. Long story short: list your business on these sites and you will make more money!

The 8 Secrets of the Kick Ass Wedding Business

I’d like to have a kick ass wedding business. Wouldn’t you?

Let’s define “kick ass” for the purposes of this article.

A Kick Ass wedding business:

  • Is financially thriving. This means making enough to not only pay the bills, but to have some fun, too.
  • Has regular, sustainable income. No more seasonal wedding “feast or famine;” this business has a regular stream of income each month.
  • Is known and referred by everyone…or at least it seems that way. These are the vendors couples hear about from a dozen different places, making them the #1 choice.

The best way to have a kick ass wedding business like this is to model the success of the businesses who are already making it happen. Makes sense, right?

That’s exactly what Jeff and I decided to do. We reverse-engineered the creation of the kick ass wedding business and came up with 8 things the most successful businesses have in common, the 8 secrets of wedding businesses who thrive in any economy.

The Kiss of Death

Let me tell you a story…

About six years ago, Jeff and I were sitting pretty with our wedding business. We had plenty of leads, our weekends were booked up with weddings, and things were looking good.

In our neck of the woods, there is a family who owns four different wedding venues. The owner, let’s call him Big Daddy, has a monopoly of sorts, and we were the top DJ referral for one of them. As a result, almost 50% of our weddings were booked at that single location.

One day, I decided to write Something. I’ve capitalized Something because it ended up being a really big deal. I published it on the internet and innocently shared it with all our wedding vendor friends.

Well, this Something I wrote got misinterpreted and misquoted by the gossips in our local wedding industry…until it finally got back to Big Daddy. It turns out Big Daddy has a quick temper, and he didn’t like what he heard about what I’d written very much.

Big Daddy forbid his staff to refer us ever, ever again.

As a result, our #1 referral source dried up just like that.

Fortunately, we had enough referral sources to book up our calendar for the next year. But if you only have one or two solid sources of leads, and one of them gets kicked out from under you, it can be the kiss of death for your business.

Kick Ass Secret #3

Secret #3 – Kick Ass Wedding Businesses have a constant stream of leads from multiple sources.

Ever hear that expression, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket?” This is never more true than when it comes to generating leads for your business.

Kick Ass Wedding Businesses have at least 5 solid sources of high-quality, targeted leads. This way, if something happens to one of them, it doesn’t kill their business. They’ll still have enough leads coming in that they can adjust and survive.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, like a photographer we know who gets nearly all her leads from another successful photography company. We keep warning her, “What happens if and when they stop sending you referrals? You have to find other sources of leads.” She’s a tragedy waiting to happen.

We learned the hard way not to depend on ONE source for our business survival. The more diverse you are, getting leads from the internet, advertising, multiple venues, social media, bridal shows and other vendor referrals, the more easily you can weather the inevitable changes in the economy.

This is just ONE of the EIGHT Secrets of the weddings businesses who thrive in any economy. Want to learn more?

Trouble Getting Brides To Read Your Website?

Have you ever wondered if your writing is good enough on your wedding business website? Well so does everyone else and the truth is that everyone makes one mistake or another. The trick is to catch the main mistakes that turn off brides while not becoming such a perfectionist that you kill the emotion of your content.

BloggingTips.com has an awesome article pointing out the top five mistakes made by rookie bloggers. While you may or may not have a blog the truth is that the main tips in blogging count in any type of online writing.

One my big pet peeves when reading online content is when there is no flow to the writing. What is flow you ask? It is writing in a way that ties thoughts together. If all you have is a bunch of thoughts thrown together you’ve lost all possibility of interesting a bride in your website, let alone booking her. If you just can’t get your content to sound right get a friend to help with the editing process. Everything you write directly affects your online success so take the time to find a way to get your site read well and make it interesting at the same time. What do you think?

Is Blogging Right For You?

If you’ve read many of our articles you’ve seen us encouraging that you have a blog on your wedding business website. The benefits are great as a wedding business blog encourages people to return to your website over and over to read new posts. However as Zac Johnson points out in his article, if you aren’t passionate about blogging, your blog is going to fail.

Don’t let that hold you back from trying blogging however. At the same time, if you don’t have the passion and time to blog but still see the benefit and want to give it a try you can always hire someone to write a couple article for you a week. Just make sure they are helpful information for brides and are exciting to read. What does exciting mean? For a blog it means that your blog article is interesting, creative and generates the desire to read more. What do you think?

The Profit Paradox: How to Make More Money by Marketing to Fewer Clients

Stand_Out

Question: Should I change to a broader business name so people don’t think I just do weddings?

I just closed my store front, but will be continuing online.I sell flowers and gifts for all occasion, I’m debating whether to change myname for the business. From Flowers and Gifts by Sarnia Weddings to Pat’sFlowers and Gift Gallery.

I think one of my mistakes is that people thought I was just for weddings.

What do you think?

Pat

Answer:

Pat,

When we’re selling our stuff, we usually think broadening our target market will bring us more business. The more people who can buy our products, the more we can sell, right?

Strangely enough, that isn’t true.

People are bombarded with a million advertising messages on the internet, TV, print, etc. A broad and generic offer doesn’t even get noticed. The more broad your offer, the less attention you get.

On the other hand, the more specific and focused your message is on one particular customer, the more powerful your message will be. When you have a narrow, targeted offer, the right customer will recognize it immediately and be drawn to it.

With all of that said, answer this question:

What is the 20% of your floral business that makes 80% of your profits?

If wedding flowers generate the majority of your revenue, focus on wedding flowers. If holiday flower delivery makes the most money, focus on that. Don’t be like the other generic companies who specialize in “everything;” choose a narrow focus and dominate that market.

Then name your business to represent that specialty.

Another idea: since you’ll be running your business online, you can easily create TWO websites if you’d like to focus on two markets. This way you can still laser target your message just for the ideal clients you want to attract.

We wish you every success in your business!

Stephanie

P.S. Since you’re considering a name change, make sure you buy a website domain name that includes the keywords people would type in to find you, even if your business name is different. Such as ontarioweddingflowers.com or ontarioflowerdelivery.com. This will make it easy for the right people to find you online when they’re searching.

An Important Strategy For Gaining New Leads That You May Be Missing

Blog

HubSpot just did a study to find out what businesses attribute their success to in an increase of leads according to the article by Rebecca Corliss. The top result wasn’t surprising – 75% tribute an increase in leads to good SEO. However the second place holder at 69% might surprise you. 69% of businesses who have experienced an increase in leads attribute part of their successes to blogging.

So why would blogging increase your wedding leads? To put it simply, blogging gives you more content on your page, Google ranks your content, and brides looking for information on your topic or business will be able to find you much easier. On top of that, blogging makes your site exciting. It encourages return visitors, and return visitors often translate into sales. So is blogging something that you have tried, and if so have you seen good results from it?

The Mistake That Is Costing Your Wedding Business Customers

man-woman-walkingHave you looked at your website and promotional materials and instead of thinking how great they look taken a look to see how easy it is for people to take the next step? How do you respond to other businesses if they ask you to sign up for something? People are busy, and like you, if there is a second step they are might go through it, if there is a third you might as well forget getting leads or customers.

If you ask someone to fill out an opt-in form it needs to be on one page, if you ask them to follow you on Facebook you need to include the link. Make it practically brainless for people to do what you want them to do and the results will be amazing. Make sure to read the article written by Passive Panda detailing why you need to make it easy for people to find you.
