How Not to Market to a Bride

By BookMoreBrides 1 Comment

Author Rebekah Henson

I’m a former bride-to-be (now a newlywed!). I also write email marketing advice for small businesses. In fact, I work for an email service provider.

Ever since I started planning my wedding, my inbox has been flooded with emails from local vendors who I never requested information from. And that quickly gets annoying.

This is the story of how I clicked the “spam” button on every unsolicited email I’ve received from vendors in the last 11 months, and how you can make sure the same thing doesn’t happen to you.

Reporting Vendors for Spam?

It might sound shocking and worrying that I would report legitimate businesses for spam, especially when I work in the marketing industry myself. But let me share some background first.

I purchased my wedding dress from a national chain store last December. They took my contact information and shared my email address with local vendors – without my knowledge.

Imagine how surprised I was when the next day, I had emails in my inbox from a local photographer and a deejay service. I had already selected a photographer and a deejay before I bought my wedding dress. But the emails kept coming, and they were all unsolicited.

So I marked every email as spam if it came in from a vendor I had never heard of or contacted myself.
There is one thing that could have helped these vendors: asking brides for permission first. Email marketing is an effective tool in your marketing arsenal, but only if you get permission from the brides you’re trying to convert into customers.

Let’s take a look at what these vendors should have done instead.

First Mistake: Assuming Permission

The assumption was that because I’m a bride, I’m interested in hearing about their services. That simply isn’t true. I already had my vendors in place and these additional advertisements were just cluttering my inbox. Not even an appealing subject line or killer offer would have stopped me from clicking “spam.”

That’s the danger in buying email lists. The only targeted list you’ll find is the list you build yourself. Sure, the list I ended up on was targeted in the sense that I’m a bride and they’re wedding vendors. But the offers they tried to send me were completely irrelevant to my wants and needs.

Solution: Get Explicit Permission

There’s an easy way to fix this mistake: Get explicit permission from brides before you start emailing them.

But first, a huge word of caution: never, ever confuse a bride emailing you for a price quote or other information with permission to add her to your mailing list. This happened to me a few times with local caterers.

When a bride contacts you with a question, she expects an answer to her question. She doesn’t expect to see your newsletter a week after your conversation is over.

One of the easiest ways to get permission is by advertising your newsletter on your website with a sign up form. Be very clear about what you’re sending (“Sign up to see my recent work and receive exclusive coupons for your wedding day!”) and only send promotional emails to the brides who sign up for them.

Second Mistake: Keeping Me on the List

Even after I marked their emails as spam, several of the vendors continued to email me more weekly promotions. This is a huge no-no when it comes to laws of commercial email sending.

Not only does it break the law, it also hurts your business. If someone on your list marked your email as spam, they are not very likely to open and read additional emails you send them. They’re more likely to do what I did: mark the email as spam again. And again. And again.

Solution: Clean Your List

This is good for you and the brides who filed complaints. The more spam complaints you rack up, the harder it will be to get your email delivered to other brides’ inboxes.

Since spam complaints have a negative impact on your email delivery, keeping those complains low will help your future emails reach the inboxes of brides who sign up for your mailing list.

Concerns About Permission?

The biggest question that comes up when talking about permission-based marketing is, “Won’t my list be too small?”

Yes, your list will be smaller than it would be if you added every single bride you ever interacted with. But your list will be filled with brides who are genuinely interested in your services, who want to give you their business.

Learn from the marketing mistakes of other vendors and get permission from brides before you step into their inbox. Your email campaign will be more profitable if you do.

2 Simple Tricks To Improve Email Marketing Results

By Sarah Schupbach Leave a Comment

Email marketing. Oh the joys of writing an email, sending it off and never hearing back. Email marketing is one of the most crucial parts of marketing now days, and one that needs the most tweaking to reach your audience. When you’ve got a wedding business things can get even trickier because a bride comes from every possible background and point in life.

So how do you get more brides opening, reading and responding to your emails? Check out the awesome article by HubSpots Allyson Galle for 11 different things you can do to improve your email marketing results. Some quick tips however are to remember that you want the subject line to be interesting. Don’t reply to an incoming email and leave the subject line “RE: Contact Form Submission.” No bride is going to be motivated to open that email. Instead replace it with a 50 character or less blurb that is motivational and to the point.

Another quick tip that will help get more opens and interest in your wedding business emails is to send your emails at the right time of day, and right day of the week. Obviously this doesn’t apply to an email response to someone who is already interested. However if you are doing a follow up of 2-3 emails to a bride whom you haven’t heard from you want to catch her when she has time to read the email. It will depend on where you are based, but a general rule of thumb is to email in the morning or late afternoon on either Tuesday or Thursday. Avoid weekends. That is the time she is going to be out at the bridal shows, shopping, meeting with vendors in person, and generally going crazy and not interested in a new contact from another bridal company. What do you think? What tactics do you use to boost bridal interest in your emails?

2 Email Subject Lines That Get Brides to Open Your Email

By Jeff Padovani 16 Comments

Follow up email to brides

The Number One Mistake Most Wedding Vendors Make Around Bridal Shows Is Not Following Up.

But how should you follow up?  How often?  What kind of follow up actually results in booked weddings?

Jeff and I just interviewed Neal Howard of Atlanta’s Best DJ and Neal Howard Productions.  Neal came up with a brilliant bridal show follow up strategy that got these results for his wedding business:

  • It’s a huge accomplishment if 10% of brides open your emails…Neal’s email follow up had a 40-50% open rate and one bride was so fascinated with his email that she read it 17 times!
  • He was able to quickly filter out the brides he didn’t want to work with and become irresistibly attractive for his ideal brides.
  • He overcame the biggest objections of brides…like PRICE…by getting his former brides to do all the hard work for him!
  • The system works automatically; he set it up once and then it works on autopilot, saving him hours of time.
  • He was able to quickly and easily build a personal relationship with the brides he did want to book so that they were “pre-sold” before they even started talking about price.

WARNING:  Before you start blasting out emails to that lead list, make sure those brides have given you permission to email them…or you could be breaking CANN-SPAM Act regulations.

Even a few spam complaints can make your email get BLACKLISTED, which means you end up in the bride’s spam folder forever…if it even arrives at all…and you can get hit with hefty fees.  Be sure to ask whoever is running the bridal show if brides have “opted in” to receive email from the vendors.

When She Receives an Email, What Makes the Bride Decide to Open…or Delete?

Well, think about what happens when you sift through your email every morning.  How do you decide what to look at?

  1. The Sender’s Name.  If you know the sender (and actually want to hear from them) you open it.  If not…DELETE.
  2. The Email Subject.  If the subject is enticing and interesting for you, you’ll open it even if you don’t know who it’s from.  On the other hand, “Sir, Business Offer from Egypt” hits the trash immediately.

The Subject of Your Email is CRITICAL Because It Determines Whether the Bride Opens Your Email or Deletes It.

That subject is like the headline of an ad.  It’s got to get her attention, arouse her curiosity and get her interest in order to make her want to open it.  And you have about 1.5 seconds to do the job.

Neal revealed some of his biggest follow up secrets on our call.  One of them…

2 Email Subjects that Get a Bride Open Your Email

1.   Her Name.

Did you ever hear that old saying, “Your name is your favorite word?”  Well, it’s true.

If you put the bride’s name in the subject line, the chances that she will open it increase exponentially.  It will definitely get her attention.

2.   Her Wedding Date.

Yep, she’s pretty obsessed with that date.  It’s her second favorite phrase right now, after her name.

Neal had a lot of success using BOTH in his subject line.  For example, “Jane, what will August 6th, 2011 be like?”

As with everything else I share, don’t take my word for this stuff.  TEST IT for yourself.

Things are changing very quickly when it comes to the internet.  What works today might not work tomorrow.  So try these subjects out and test your results.  Does she open your email?  Does she respond?

Want More Email Follow Up Tips?

If you want to know more about how to track your email opens and test out those subjects, Neal does a great job explaining it.  Leave your name and email here, and Neal will share some of the actual emails he sends to his brides so that you can create your own bride booking emails.
