Stress can be an insurmountable obstacle if you let yourself get overwhelmed by it and don’t take steps to deal with it correctly. Believe me, I’ve been there, and it’s not worth letting it get out of hand. Those who believe that you can just push through and get past it, well it doesn’t quite work that way.

When you own your own business the only way to deal with stress is to find a way to deal with it on a day to day basis. The means building your business work structure in a way that gives you the ability to work, and take breaks without the two world crossing over into each other. The blog lifehacker cites Tim Horie’s format for dealing with stress as working quite well which is to divide your day into the parts: thinking, doing and relaxing. Partitioning your life like this is quite literally a life saver and will help you in being able to both focus on what you need to get done, while still being able to relax and enjoy your life. How are you able to deal with stress in your business?

  1. Great suggestions, Kelly and Anne. Jeff in particular is quite happy to have another reason to indulge in some vino…

  2. Anne Roos says:

Physical activity! Get away from the desk, the phone, everything having to do with business and find an activity you love (my favorite activity is martial arts).

  3. Kelly says:

Both myself and my husband are self employed (in different fields) and we both work from home, and bring up a 2 & 3 year old at the same time. I find the only way we can switch off from work mode to relaxing time is having a set proper play time with the kids (with both of us their) supper, bath, story and bed for the kids then a good glass of wine in front of the fire! Then the temptation to pop in and check your emails is gone, as what ever I write now would not be professional after a glass of wine! :)
